A seemingly previously healthy 26-year-old Tunisian woman suffered three episodes of acute kidney injury, the experts observed. The researchers emphasised that these episodes occurred after she had undergone a hair straightening procedure some time before the incidents, during which she initially experienced burning and then ulcers on her head. In addition, the disorder was accompanied by other symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and back pain.

After each individual episode, the patient’s laboratory tests showed elevated plasma creatinine levels. However, kidney function recovered some time after the exacerbation. The scientists pointed out that the cream used for straightening contained glyoxylic acid, and they decided to apply this product to the backs of mice to test its effect.
